Big Pictures, the distribution-cum-production arm of Reliance Big Entertainment, has acquired distribution rights of two of the year’s biggest blockbusters – Kites and 3 Idiots- for roughly Rs 130 crore.

The buzz in Bollywood circles is that the domestic distribution rights of the Rakesh Roshan-produced and Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori-starrer Kites has been lapped up in the region of Rs 90 crore. In the same breath, Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots, directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, has been picked up for Rs 40 crore.

Kamal Gianchandani, chief operating officer (distribution), Reliance Big Pictures, says, “It’s true we have acquired the distribution rights of 3 Idiots recently and Kites a little earlier. But, we are not in a position to share anything on the numbers front.”

“These are two of the biggest ‘tentpole’ films this year. Their box-office potential is huge. Both films can each notch up net collections of Rs 175-200 crore domestically which includes the exhibitor’s share. The distributor’s share around 50 per cent of this amount,” Gianchandani said.

According to Gianchandani, Big Pictures has charted out more or less a three-pronged strategy to circulate films nationally in the sphere of domestic distribution, especially those with a respectable revenue size.

Big Pictures will distribute the films directly in all major territories in the country. “The company has the infrastructure in place to handle this. We are present in all prime territories countrywide,” Gianchandani said.

“Further, the endeavour in multiplexes would be to maximise the showcasing of films so that we are able to meet the demand and expectations of all stakeholders, including viewers, in the fist weekend,” he said.

The third prong of the strategy is to collaborate with exhibitors in promoting the films “aggressively” coupled with a 20-25 per cent increment in ticket prices for the first weekend. “This will help expand the box-office pie. For the next calendar year, too, we are looking for 8-10 releases with sizeable revenue size,” Gianchandani informed.
